Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology
"Assistive technology is a range of devices, equipment, services and strategies used to eliminate problems and to improve an individual's level of function" (Cook & Hussey, 2000)
One example of assistive technology is a very simple yet effective device that magnetically sits ontop of jars and an audio message can be recorded saying for example 'this is the strawberry jam' so that people with visual impairments can just push the button and listen to hear what the product is. The device is only $4 so is an option for everyone that would find it useful.
In the tutorial we used the device to put on the strawberry jam that was used for scones. it helps a person function better because they don't have to rely on their impaired vision and risk making a mistake, instead they listen.

Many ethical issues may arise on facebook, especially around informed consent. Photos of people can easily be put onto facebook without that persons consent. Those photos could also very easily be photoshoped and altered.

Tutorial Four & Five: Video Production
During tutorial four and five we had to use a storyboard to plan and then produce our own short videos which we then had to learn how to post a video
YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, view and share videos, others can then rate and post comments on the videos people broadcast. In this tutorial we learnt how to post YouTube videos.
Planning a film requires a lot of work on the storyboard, we completed one in class for out short movies. It involves coming up with the topic and then going through each shot that is going to be done from the start to the finish. The type of shot also has to be included here as well as any other details that make the process of filming the clip easier and more efficient.

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications
"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature"
Some of the pluses that digital cameras hold in relation to more traditional film based cameras are that they are multifunctional and have the ability to record sound and video as well as photographs. The digital camera also allows people to see the image straight away, they are much smaller so more portable and can copy the images to other devices with ease. Some of the minuses digital cameras have are around the cost of equipment because it is more than jus the actual camera that needs to be purchased, you also need to buy camera cords, camera cases, memory cards and if you want to print your own photos you also need a printer, ink and photo paper for example.
Digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communication technology in many different ways, these include putting photos onto computers or laptops then also putting them onto CD's or memory sticks. You can also upload and share photos with friends on social networking sites like facebook, bebo and myspace as well as email them to others via cell phones or normal email accounts. Photos can also be used in editing programmes such as photoshop.
Ethical issues that may arise from the use of image capturing devices will most likely revolve around informed consent, it is very easy for photos to be taken of someone when they are unaware or not thinking about where the image could end up so if someone puts that photo on a social networking site without their permision issues will arise here. The photo could also be mistreated by using the likes of photoshop where the image can get dramatically edited without the viewer knowing its been changed so this too would form issues surrounding informed consent if the photo was publisied without the persons awareness.
Digital images could be used in occuaptional therapy for housing modifications or where a client might need some sort of adaptive equipment. It would also help if you wanted to get a second opinion about something you could dicuss the image with other collegues.

Optical zoom uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer. Digital zoom is an invention of digital video cameras. It is not uncommon to see digital videocams with 300x digital zoom.

Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues
Information Technology/Information Communications Technology is defined as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

Information Technology is very prevalent in our society because people have become so reliant on it. IT devices have become extremely common place, they are used in such a wide range of places they make the functioning of a work place run more smoothly and efficiently but the are also used at home for socialization such as emails and phone calls as well as providing families with activities to engage in together.
I feel comfortable using most IT devices, especially things like computers, digital cameras and cell phones because these are all devices that i commonly use. So because I have had exposure to a range of devices I feel like this would make it easier for me to figure out how to use devices that are new to me.
I have had placements in mental health settings so i saw IT devices such as a Wii, computers, cameras and T.V's being used to provide clients with the opportunity to engage in meaningful occupation. As well as being used with the clients, the staff rely heavily on the use of email and cell phones to stay in contact with other team members and get messages about clients.
Ethical implications that arise from capturing, sharing and transferring information via IT devices can involve not having the correct informed consent. The more technology develops the more the likely hood of people misusing the technology will increase such as using other peoples information or work without getting there consent.
Computer Ethics is defined as a "set of moral principles that regulate the use of computers. Some common issues of computer ethics include intellectual property rights (such as copyrighted electronic content), privacy concerns, and how computers affect society".

It is important that we have an large understanding of information technology communications and all the ethical issues it encompasses because it will help us in out practice and daily lives by being aware of the technology that is used in communities everywhere.
